5 THINGS TO DO 5 MONTHS BEFORE A MARATHON
With a little over five months to go, it’s time to kick your prep into gear. So, if you’re reading this now, you’re already ahead of the game. Here’s what you can start doing now to hit the ground running (literally) by event day.
1. SET A GOAL THAT GETS YOU EXCITED
What’s the dream for event day? Write it down, stick it on your mirror, or go all out and make it your phone background. Some goal inspiration:
- Cross the finish line: 26.2 miles is no joke, so finishing is already a win.
- Smash a PB: Got a time in mind? Good! Set a realistic goal, you can always adjust this depending on how training goes.
- Fundraise for a cause: Want to run for a purpose and give yourself that extra motivation? Check out our Official Charities or set up a JustGiving page to rally the troops behind you.
2. GET HONEST ABOUT YOUR FITNESS
Time for a fitness check. Where are you now, and where do you want to be? Start with small goals, like running 5 – 10k continuously. Not there yet? Start easy, work up to it, and build some strength on the side. A little core work or light leg workouts now will save you from injuries later.
3. START EXPERIMENTING
What works for one person might not work for another, so start experimenting with these:
- Mileage: Find your sweet spot with weekly mileage. Some need high mileage: others can crush it with less – no two people are the same (don’t compare yourself to everyone on social media!)
- Fuel: Experiment with snacks pre- and post-run. You’ll be grateful when the mileage increases.
- Hydration: Get your hydration habits down early. You’ll want a hydration routine that works for you – remember to drink to thirst, you do not want to over or under hydrate.
4. GET KITTED OUT
Having the right kit for you not only makes sure you’re performing to your best, but it can also help motivate you during the winter training. Here’s our top things to consider:
What type of runner are you, and what kit is going to give you the best comfort to support your training?
Training between now and April will need kit for all weather scenarios – make sure you’ve got warm clothing for your winter training (we’re thinking hats, coats, gloves!)
Accessories can make a difference – gloves, phone holders, belts, and the right socks can ensure you make the most of every training opportunity.

5. BOOK YOUR STAY
Over 36,000 people will be hitting the course, which means hotel bookings are going fast. Secure your accommodation now with Stay22 so you can rest easy the night before. It’s one less thing to worry about when you’re gearing up for the big day.
That’s it—five steps to start now so you can show up ready to crush it in five months.
